If you’re an indie music lover, Just Like Heaven is one of those festivals you have to experience at least once.
Actually… twice, in my case.
I went in 2022 and 2023, both times solo, and I’d absolutely do it again. If your Spotify Wrapped is full of bands like The Strokes, Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party, Interpol, Phoenix, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and other indie rock legends, this festival honestly feels like it was made for you.
It’s Basically All Your Favorite Bands in One Day
The best part about Just Like Heaven is that there’s no filler lineup.
Instead of waiting all weekend for one or two artists you care about, it feels like every set is someone you’ve loved for years. It’s one nostalgic performance after another, and you’ll probably find yourself sprinting between stages trying not to miss anything.
Because of that, I really think it’s worth splurging.
Go VIP (Or Platinum If You Can)
If you’re already traveling to Pasadena and buying festival tickets, I say go all out.
VIP—or even Platinum if it’s in your budget—makes a huge difference if you want to get closer to the stage without spending your entire day camping at one spot.
Since it’s a one-day festival packed with incredible artists, having easier viewing areas helps you actually enjoy more of the lineup instead of stressing about where to stand.
Don’t Be Afraid to Go Solo
I know going to a music festival alone sounds intimidating.
I went solo both years, and honestly? It was one of the best concert experiences I’ve had.
Everyone is there because they love the same music, so conversations happen naturally while you’re waiting for sets or grabbing food. I met some genuinely cool people both years, and it reminded me that indie fans are usually pretty easy to talk to.
I’ve actually had similar experiences at This Ain’t No Picnic, which is also held at the Rose Bowl, where I met some awesome people as well.
If none of your friends want to spend the money or share your music taste, don’t let that stop you from going.
Be Ready for Bad Cell Service
One thing people don’t talk about enough is the cell service.
Expect your signal to disappear once the festival gets busy.
If you’re meeting friends, pick a meeting spot before separating because texting probably won’t work consistently.
If you’re going solo, this isn’t really an issue—but it’s something to keep in mind.
Driving Is the Easiest Option
The Rose Bowl isn’t the easiest venue when it comes to transportation.
Personally, I don’t understand how people successfully rely on rideshares directly from the venue. Pickup areas become incredibly congested, and getting service can already be difficult because of the crowds.
If you can, drive.
Another popular option is renting a parking spot from a nearby homeowner. Some local residents offer parking on their property during major Rose Bowl events, which can make getting out afterward much easier.
If you’re staying with friends nearby, parking there and walking is another great option.
If rideshare is your only choice, be prepared to walk well away from the venue before requesting your ride. It’ll usually save you time compared to trying to get picked up right outside the festival.
Final Thoughts
Just Like Heaven is one of my favorite festivals because it knows exactly who it’s for.
It’s a dream day for people who grew up listening to indie rock in the 2000s and early 2010s. Hearing so many iconic bands back-to-back with thousands of other fans who know every lyric is something that’s hard to replicate anywhere else.
Whether you’re going with friends or flying solo like I did, I’d absolutely recommend making the trip. Come prepared, wear comfortable shoes, expect to lose cell service for a while, and don’t be afraid to strike up conversations with the people around you.
